Release Alert (5/8/10): Air Jordan Spizike Black/New Blue/White/Infrared

Air Jordan Spizike Black/New Blue/White/Infrared

“It’s gotta be the SHOES!”

Those of us who are old enough…err…were younger back in the day, remember Mars Blackmon.  Originally a character in the 1986 film She’s Gotta Have It, Mars, Spike Lee’s proclaimed alter ego, struck gold by collaborating with Nike as a pitch man for none other than Michael Jordan – and his kicks of course.

Obviously, adding Spike to the Air Jordan campaign can be seen as the origin of combining pop culture with sneaker marketing, a tactic that we’ve seen explode over the last couple of decades.  Michael and Phil Knight clearly enjoyed a mountain of success with Mars at their side as well.

To show their appreciation, Nike created the Air Jordan Spizike sneaker in honor of the iconic film maker.  What makes these kicks so special?  The Spizike is a cocktail of five different models from MJ’s signature line with the most obvious traits coming from the Jordan III, IV, and VI.

While there has been a wide array of colorways, the Black/New Blue/White/Infrared edition looks to be one of the bigger releases in the series.  The upper is composed of white patent leather, black suede, and an off-white synthetic rhino print leather, which is my favorite part of this colorway.  We can see the New Blue accents on the heel tab and signature Jumpman logo that rests on a suede pad over the laces.  The Infrared quietly speaks through the Phylon midsole and the lace fastener.  Finishing things off is the transparent ice blue section of the full rubber outsole, very sick.

The Air Jordan Spizike Black/New Blue/White/Infrared will be dropping in-store this Saturday, May 8, 2010 at the House of Hoops for $175 per.  However, there are pairs already for sale online (see below) if you just can’t wait!  I think I may have just found the perfect birthday gift to give myself.  As always though, check hour to hour with HOH as release day draws near.
