Brush up Mind Mapping Skills for Better Essays

Composing the essay is a lengthy process that requires proper planning and strategy to write and complete. At times the planning part of the essay is just as important as the writing part if not more. Every type of essay benefits from the prewriting phase, in which the mind mapping takes the central stage.

Mind mapping is the creative process of giving your thoughts and ideas a visual-spatial representation. By putting it all on the paper the essay writer doesn’t have to occupy his/her mind by remembering ideas and subject details and can concentrate instead on analysis on the subject matter and the related information.

The usefulness of mindmaps

These maps use images, numbers, colors, and art to create a visually appealing representation of the information.

The mind maps are useful for various reasons:

  • They provide you with an overview of the subject and its components.
  • They can hold a copious amount of content and ideas
  • You get to know the various relationships and linkages between parts of the subject that you might have missed in a linearly written text.
  • Being visually appealing it allows for stimulating our thought processes and helps us concentrate.

Creating a Mindmap

Intricate mind maps can be made on the computer using online tools. The writer has to be adept at them and familiar with their workings through practice. However, a similar and sometimes even powerful technique is mapping on a piece of paper. Here is how to proceed with it:

  • Start with the main subject in the middle of the paper. This will be the main topic of the essay and the thought map.
  • Put down the main ideas, the wider categories, or the themes. They should come at the end of a line/branch germinating from the center.
  • Instead of full names of subjects, ideas, and subtopics, you should use images, symbols, and keywords.

Once the initial layer/foundation is laid down, you will then move to the subtopics of your essay. Here too you will use the branching technique:

  • The branching out will remain the same. More details will be inserted in the map denoted by keywords and images.
  • Each subsequent branch will be different from the previous in its color or shape.
  • The size of both the text and images will get smaller as you move from the center to outwards.
  • You can add lists to various items.
  • Realize the relationships between different parts and put a note to identify them

Using the mindmaps the essay

  • Turning linear notes into maps

You can turn your linear notes into mind maps to better plan your essay. For this, you will have to turn your text into keywords. Substituting each keyword for a formed thought in the text and then mapping out these keywords with the main subject in the middle.

  • Collecting information and note-making

You can note down information from important sources while also preserving their order. The note-making becomes an interactive process, such that you can merge it with other mind maps made from going through different literature.

  • Organizing the time

You can use the same techniques to branch items and subjects according to their occurrence. You will also note down the time it would take you to accomplish the task.

This can be done at the start of the essay writing process, along with the brainstorming session, so that it can provide essaywriter with an action plan. As the maps grow larger you will also make out the additional time it would take to accomplish the task. Lastly, it will help you prioritize the information by labeling and listing them, such that when you have to eliminate parts from the essay, you easily can.
